mobiles aren't just for kids

A new personal project I've been working on are painted mobiles. I've only done 1 so far but I'm on number 2 already. The second one will be quite different from the first, because that's how I roll, and because what I've been doing is using scraps of whatever I can find to put these together. Sometimes I go to the dollar store to see what I can use and sometimes I go to Urban Source to see what random goodies they have collected.

The first one was just an experiment but I truly loved what I came up with. It only took me 6 months to finish it. Maybe I'll finish number 2 in less time...no promises though. Art cannot be rushed.

people taking pictures of Dana's t-shirts #2

I believe this photography series, which I started last week, is really looking deep into the mind of the general public. Everyone wants a piece of Dana. What will Dana wear next? What does Dana think about the future?

Therefore, to find answers within ourselves, we need to take pictures of people taking pictures of Dana's t-shirts. It's the only way. I'm pretty sure you're not following me here, but maybe this photo will say everything I didn't say.

I call this "D on D".

First photo in this series was published on June 22nd, 2008.

everyone for themselves on the bike path

Just a warning to anyone considering a nice relaxing ride along a bike trail in Vancouver, especially at around 8:15 in the A.M., be very careful.

I decided to leave early for a breakfast date and cruise down Ontario Street to the Seawall because I had heard the new section by the Olympic village is really beautiful. So I get on Ontario, the bike route, and slowly more and more bikers catch up with me at each stoplight. Those morning bikers aren't on cruise ship time, like myself, they're on get to work at the speed of light time, PLUS, they're completely trying to get ahead of the other bikers. This morning I got all caught up in the race to the next light, so much that I fumbled with my flip flops and lost one of them but had to keep biking for fear of causing a major train wreck.

My heart was pumping so fast and after the mob left I was able to slow it down to a pace I had meant for all along.

So be it a lesson for you: If you are going to take a bike route and don't want to lose the race, don't wear flip flops. Easy.

a beer league doesn't actually mean get completely wasted...

Since the beginning of spring, Benny and I have been playing volleyball as part of the Urban Rec beach(sand) volleyball league that happens every year in Vancouver. You'd be surprised how easy it is to be part of something fun, active and outdoors here on the West Coast. Or maybe not. I can't read your mind, you know.

Anyways, we've finished our spring league with our spring league team and have started the summer league with a new team (GOOOOOOOOOOO WILDCATS!) since a few of our pals were interested in playing as well. We desperately wanted to place in the same pool as our old team (GOOOOOOOOO CHEVRONS!) but I think that maybe we didn't drink enough beer or we were so gung ho or something happened, that we shockingly placed in the second to last pool (and not the last-last pool that I originally estimated).

wildcats in full form

bump, sets! (formally known as the chevrons)

Sigh.

I'm KIDDING! Our new team is great and our new friends and old friends are great and the continuous flow of WildCats(beer) make for a knee-slapping good time. We definitely miss our old team (Gooo Chevrons! ...although the "TRAITOR!" calls are getting a little tired) but we love our new team and couldn't have picked a better way to enjoy our summer at home.

wildcats class photo with special guest star: keri heese

Honourable mention goes to Beans for coming out again and again to sub in for the WildCats! Maybe next summer you can be an official team mate?! HIP-HIP! HOORAY! HIP-HIP! HOORAY! HIP-HIP! HOORRRRAY!!!!!!!!

Ready2Wear colour changes

I'm pretty sure everyone knows that we offer colours changes to all our Ready2Wear wedding stationery. Well if you didn't, now you do. Sometimes it's hard to imagine what a design would look like different colours, or if a particular design would even suite your wedding colours.

I have decided to show you some examples of how we change colours to our stationery.

This E-Save-The-Date example is from one of our latest designs called Re: Kismet. We have applied 3 different colour schemes to it. Easy!!

p.s. another way of seeing a design in other colours is by clicking on the "view images of this design" (if it's available) so you can see what others have done with this design. They are either pictures from a wedding or photos we've taken ourselves. They're helpful either way.

friends, family and a sushi race (OR: what teenie did this weekend)

Last weekend was the first weekend in quite some time that we (Ben & I) didn't have prior commitments; were, in fact, staying in the city and shockingly, were just going to let the days happen organically. Now, I should preface that we're not super rigid people, by any means, but since the beginning of 2008 (at least it feels like since the beginning of 2008) we've had every weekend booked with stuff to do: demolish a deck, build a deck, visit the family on the island, work at one of Erin's many weddings, house-sit, dog-sit, house & dog sit, MOVE OUT OF THE OFFICE...the list goes on. Needless to say, we were pretty excited about the spontaneity of last weekend.

Saturday was spent shopping for Ben's youngest brother Sam's birthday present. Belated birthday present, I may add. We joined forces with his older brother Joel and girlfriend, Ella, and the four of us proceeded to comb through the W.4th shops in search for the perfect present. Since I have our present in my hallway waiting to be posted, I can't tell you the results but I CAN tell you we took turns patting each other on the back at the end of our expedition.

Somewhere along that day, we were invited to join Ben's friends Len and Mike on their hardcore sports day (also known as Len & Mike's big day of fun) that they were having. They started out at the horse track and won a whopping $12 bucks on one bet, moved onto a sports bar where they watched the Blue Jays play someone or other (I only know this because Mike had a Blue Jay's jersey on) and then met US at Nat Bailey Stadium to watch the opening weekend game against some team in grey shirts.

So here's the thing: this was my first time at a baseball game in Vancouver, in Nat Bailey Stadium, ever. I've never really seen the appeal of baseball to tell you the honest truth, but I do enjoy cheering at live sports events. Plus, I like my snacks.

It was FUN! I got to eat a Nathan's famous hot dog, a cup of fries, a root beer, some of Mike's warm peanuts (which, apparently, is fair game to throw the shells on the floor, on your seat or in your friend's face) and a mini-donut or two from Len (and no, it's not fair game to throw these in your friends faces).

At the end of every inning, they do some entertaining thing kind of like half time at a basketball game. It's a great way for boys to refill their plastic cups with beer and for the rest of us to not get bored. That's not even the BEST part. The best part is how much our baseball team and our stadium and everything about this game, here in Vancouver, is SOOOOOO Vancouver.

They. Had. A. Sushi. Race.

A sushi race! ONLY in Vancouver would you see characters dressed up like your california roll, your kappa maki and your wasabi having it out around a baseball diamond.

That, my friends, was worth the $11 entrance. Oh yes, a sushi race.

As the sun went down, dusk settled into its cozy corner and the crowd wrapped themselves up in anything that would keep them warm. What's a great way to wrap up a fantastic evening of baseball? With a wicked fireworks show put on for us after the game. I think the roman candles shooting into the air were my favourite.

Sunday was family fun in the sun day with my brother Court, his babymama Karen, and my little niece Lexybear. We drove out after lunch to their place and realized that we were being used (just as we were using them for their beautiful saline pool) as entertainers of Lexy for the day. I'm pretty sure as soon as we got there they "had to do something" or "just gotta go out for a minute" and left the three of us to play amongst ourselves.

Ben and Lexy had some discussions, the three of us frolicked in the pool and played many, many pool games including joust with pool noodles. (Lexy and I won, Benny totally lost.)

Somehow, somewhere, they seem to find little handy projects for Ben to do while we're there. I think because my Vasseur family is the complete opposite of handy and things tend to sit around unfixed or unadjusted for years and years. Anyway, Ben, as always, jumped to his task with excitement and vigor and this time even had a little assistant to help him out.

Thanks for the good times, everybody! Best first weekend of summer, ever!

jazz festival with dana oikawa

My good friend Dana Oikawa accompanied me to the free Gastown Jazz this Saturday for a day of overcast skies and good music. I have to say there was nothing that blew us away this year, but it's always good to just hang out and be entertained by musicians you might not have heard of or generally wouldn't go out to see on their own.

Dana and myself probably wouldn't be the friends we are today without the Jazz Festival. Is that a bold statement? I'll let you be the judge. When we were working together at the Lululemon warehouse, Dana put it out there to everyone that she wanted to leave work early for a Gastown show and we (Dana and I) were the only ones that went...two strangers living in a dangerous time.

So the Jazz Festival will always be special in our hearts. Hey Dana? Special? OH YOU KNOW IT'S SPECIAL.

***
Speaking of Dana, the other day we were enjoying a nice mid day break on the Heritage Hall steps when a man with a camera came up to Dana and asked to take a picture of her and her funny t-shirt. It was for a series he's working on. HM! A bit random wouldn't you say?

As he took a picture of her, I quickly snapped a picture of them. I'm going to say it's part of my series on people taking pictures of Dana's t-shirts. This is picture number one.

Our R2W thank you tags are growing up so fast

Sometimes it's hard to picture how a product will look while being used at it's full potential. I know seeing a digital view of a thank you tag can look kind of silly and maybe not so useful...but when you place in an environment that it's meant for...it SHINES.

Check out some of out Ready2Wear Thank You tags. Don't they look fabulous attached to the fun wedding gift ideas? Sparklers!! I think I would LOVE to get sparklers at a wedding.

Music To Listen To

We love listening to all sorts of music while we work and on various radio stations we have heard some pretty wicked awesome bands.

Here are some I recommend a listen to. You won't regret it. I don't think. Or maybe you will. Do we like the same music? I don't know. Maybe.

Greg Laswell - myspace page - Greg's music has been on all sorts of tv soundtracks, so you may have heard of him or maybe just heard his music and didn't know it.

The Ting Tings - myspace page - Shut Up And Let Me Go is one of my favorites right now. You just gotta get up and dance when you listen to it.

Peter Adams - myspace page - There are 5 members in the Peter Adams band, including Peter Adams. There's something about their songs that make me smile. It's a bit different in a very subtle kind of way...yet it's familiar. I like it.

Odd News Of Today

So every morning I do a quick skim through a handful of online news sites and today I found a few odd and interesting stories I wanted to share.

1. "Romanian villagers have voted to re-elect a dead man as their mayor, to prevent his living rival winning." - read more at BBC News

2. "AN Italian man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and forcing her to iron his clothes and wash his dishes." - read more at News.com.au

3. "5th foot found on B.C.'s south coast" - read more at CBC News

Many feet are being discovered on the coast of BC. Isn't that bizarre?? Making your ex-girlfriend iron your clothes??? Isn't that bizarre?? Electing a dead man?? Isn't that bizarre??

The world is a strange place.

Water Bottle Label Sticker Fun

For the past 5 years we've received all sorts of interesting custom ideas, and this isn't necessarily weird, but it's one that we thought was strange in the beginning and then more and more people started ordering it.

I guess custom water bottle labels is the new white.

I took some pictures of designs we've done in the past.

Welcome to Vancouver, Summer!

What a fantastic weekend!! The weather is fantastic, the people are happy and it's car free day so there are fun festivals everywhere I look. HEY WHAT'S THAT? Just kidding. There's no festival in my apartment. Silly.

I started my car free day with a fun bike ride to Commercial Drive where the streets are packed and I mean PACKED with people, dogs and whatever else you could fit in there. Spirits were high and the music at the park just made you want to drop everything and move your body around. I caught most of the set for Zimbamoto in Grandview Park and it was awesome. Afterwards a popsicle cooled me down a bit and then I carried on with my day.

On my way home I came across a Portuguese Father's Day Parade. I was invited to the big fun party by one of the congregation but I decided to enjoy what I saw on the street, which included seeing the older men all parading down the street together laughing and having a good time celebrating our Heavenly Father. Good to see!

As soon as I got home I ate a quick peanut butter and banana sandwich and then walked over to Main Street. It was another big party, and I was surprised how noticeably different it was compared to Commercial Drive...not that it's a competition. ha!

There was some cool stuff to see like a small half pipe for people to jump in and skate on, a few stages and lots of sidewalk chalk drawings. One thing I noticed and really appreciated was how easily little kids, and i'm talking 1-2 year olds, will get up in front of a band and just start tearing it up. It was so great.

So that sums up main street. I didn't take pictures of Main Street because I forgot my camera at home. Although the show is still on. I could easily walk over and take a few shots to complete this post. That would definitely make it complete. We'll see. OK I went. I went. I had to put a long sleeve shirt over my deep pink/red shoulders though. ouch.

So I didn't make it out to mini golf. I promise this week I will. It's for Bill!

To Happy Fathers

It's Fathers Day! What you know this already?? WELL then.

So I had an idea for father's day but we'll see if it works out, it being No Car Day. The idea was to go mini golfing cuz my dad's a big lover of golfing and since I don't really want to golf, I thought mini golf was a good replacement. And also my dad is on the other side of the country, so I guess this is my way to say "I appreciate you and wish you were here so we could be playing mini golf together although you've had way more practice and usually always win"

My dad is quiet and smart and just when you think he's not listening he'll crack the funniest joke. I hope he enjoys his dad day. I'm sure going to try my hardest.

Albertine is away for the weekend, but I'm sure she's doing lots of special things for her dads. To DADS! "CHING" (our flute glasses say)

The Way Home - documentary on homelessness in BC

For quite some time now I've known my friend Louvens Remy was working on a really big film project, one that he got really passionate about and cares for deeply. This documentary had them traveling all over BC to interview people and see personally an issue we tend to ignore and brush aside in this country.

The film is called The Way Home and it's about homelessness in BC. The first screening of this film is completely free at Woodlands Park, Vancouver (700 Woodland Drive, at Adanac) on June 20th at 8pm. They wanted this special event to be free so everyone can come out to see it.

It's a sneak preview, so hopefully lots of people will come out and see it and get interested and maybe learn a thing or two. Along with the movie, there will be live music and more.

Come on out!!!

Silver Accolade for BSD

Last night we learned something extremely fun. We found out that Blue Skies & Daisies is a winner!!

Now it sounds really big time, and it is, but I don't want you to ever feel intimidated by us. This achievement can change our lives in ways we never thought would happen, but we want to remember our friends...our little people.

So here it is: The American Design Awards gave blueskiesanddaisies.com a silver for the monthly design contest of May, 2008. I KNOW!!! I KNOW!!!

Here's the deal, we submitted our blue skies and daisies' website link in may and I guess the judges take all the sites and give them a score. Anyone over 70 is a winner. Out of the 768 submitted websites, only 31 received the honour of being mentioned on their winners page (woohoo!) So if you divide 768 to the total winnners and try...to...get a percentage...carry the 9...768 divided by 31...or 31 divided by 768...or do you...um...well let me tell you, we're winners and that's cool.

South Granville office & South Main office

Well we moved, smoothed and now we groove. Sorry that was lame. We did move though, as I mentioned earlier, it went smoothly.

So now things are turning into slight normality, we can post pictures and let things flow as they should.

Let's begin the Blue Skies & Daisies tour with our head office, in South Granville where Teenie will be spending most of her days being the queen of the castle that she is.
It's so spacious and welcoming isn't it?
She really knows how to make space work for her and Benny. It makes me want to work there.

And here is Albertine hard at work in her new and improved office.
Moving on to the South Main office, this is where I, Brina Schenk, work my magic. I'm letting you in on my secrets...not really though. Oh you wish!!
I reside in a spacious attic and have turned my space into a creative beast. It's a bit of heaven for me. Here is a picture of me enjoying myself.

There you have it. I hope you enjoyed your tour. Please feel free to drop in and say hi. We'd love to have you!

Grooms and their Man Friends

Recently I stumbled upon this website built and designed for Grooms and their man friends. As I find the whole idea of separating men and women (as a wedding is about uniting as one) a little ridiculous, I guess it's a bit necessary. I've seen the other wedding resource websites, and you couldn't get more feminine. I'm sure they all have information that can appeal to grooms, maybe a small portion, but I'm assuming this team in New York saw and even experienced the lack of man stuff and pounced on it.

The website is GroomGroove.com

From the website:
Michael Arnot - Founder of GroomGroove.com and President of Groove Media LLC, owner of GroomGroove.com

Mike is the typical guy - doesn't care about wedding flowers, wedding songs and invitations. When asked to make a wedding speech, however, he realized there were no wedding resources for men available online. Being an entrepreneurial type, he set out to create a man's guide to weddings and the result is GroomGroove.com, the web's only wedding and engagement guide for men. A lawyer by training (and, by virtue of his work with GroomGroove.com, forever a groom), he lives in New York with his glorious wife and son.

***

So Mike has a hand full of people maintaining the website and I think they're doing a great job. It's interesting and it's funny. I can't say I won't go back to this website. I know I'm not a man. Shhhhh don't tell them.

bowling is fun

I'm not the biggest fan of bowling. I generally don't go bowling. However, on Thursday we all had a free night, so I said to the biggest bowling fans "Let's go bowling!"

And of course they dropped what they were doing and got their butts in the car immediately.

Let me introduce to you our bowlers for the evening:

Ben

Teeniebear

Robowler

and Beans

When I was 10 or so I was photographed in Oshawa while bowling and it landed on the front page of the Oshawa Times newspaper. The photo above brings back those memories, memories of slight embarrassment because they had caught me in a moment of pure mid bowling toss splendor and possibly my eyes were half closed and my tongue was hanging out. One day I'll find it, scan it and post it. You'll laugh and I'll laugh and it will be a fun good time.

So back to Thursday...

It was a night of eating and drinking (as you can see by Teenie's face, she was giddy like a school girl)

and picking the ball that whispers in your ear "hey, can i talk to you for a second?"

everyone was competing for the title of champion and would swoop to the lowest levels to break your flow...by making faces, taking pictures with a flash at just the right moment...and so on.

by the end of the night our eyes were glossy and everything seemed a little bit fuzzy

Ben pretty much ruled the evening, mostly because we were all stunned by his wicked spinning technique, that is until Beans blew him out of the water in the last game with her new found my-thumb-hurts ball toss, while Teeniebear and Robowler proved to everyone that they don't need to win to have fun.

I'd go again.
